This is a really fun activity for starting to learn about properties of materials and the effect of gradient on speed. we split the experiment into two parts, first we tested different materials to see which worked best as a boat and then we raced the boats down different inclines.. For those who want to build their own boat though, ferro-cement is a cheaper option, though labor-intensive.there are people who are sailing the world in boats made of this material, but for us, it is a non-starter. some insurance companies will not insure them..
