Skin On Frame Pack Boat

This is the first picture of the boat, june 22, 2013. the 3 (fore & aft are identical) frames were based on the delaware ducker in chapelle american small sailing craft, note that i increased the freeboard another 2 or 3".about 1.5" of rocker were forced into each end, gunwales are about 1.5" x .75".. Building a skin on frame joel white pulling boat 18' long 54" beam 21" depth to sheer amidships i was looking for a double ended rowing / sailing beach cruiser that two people could use for extended camping in semi protected waters.. In 2018 i created a system that allows you to build any double ended skin on frame boat you can imagine, from one set of plans. the 14 canoes i built this summer are just the tip of the iceberg..

Skin on frame (sof) is not only one of the oldest methods for building a boat, it is also one of the easiest. to build a boat, one covers a frame with fabric. the simplest sof craft are made from plywood frames and wooden stringers. more complex designs use steamed ribs to hold stringers.. Types of skin boats. as time passed many boats were made on the same concept as that of skin boats. one example of such boat is inuit kayak. kayak is a traditional boat made by stretching seal skins over a wooden framework or a whale skeleton and then coating it with animal fats.. On the virtues of the fuselage-frame skin boat . full disclosure: the plans for egret, a fuselage-style skin-on-frame kayak of my own design, are available from duckworks.one might therefore be inclined to think that this article is entirely self-promotional, and that i’m just singing the praises of the fuselage frame because i design kayaks this way, but that is not accurate..
